What is Pilates
Pilates is a system of exercises that promotes balanced strength and flexibility. Joseph and Clara Pilates developed the method which is now nearly 100 years old. Combining Joe’s explorations in fitness, yoga and boxing with Clara’s knowledge and compassion as a nurse, they spent a lifetime applying their ideas to real people. They rehabilitated injured WW1 soldiers in England and worked to prevent injury and produce peak performance in professional athletes in New York City. From its conception, the Pilates method was designed to fit us all. It is gentle enough for a pregnant woman and challenging enough for pros. Even Jay-Z does it. It usually takes two years to become a fully certified Pilates instructor. We study anatomy and train rigorously, acquiring a deep understanding of the body. In other words, we’ll help you to do a lot more than just squeeze your ass and try harder. We provide expert instruction and focused personal attention to our clients. Each session is customized to fit your body. The results are immediate.

As for Leyna, Pilates made her an athlete and a dancer. But she didn't start out that way! Coming at Pilates feeling disassociated from her body, Leyna cultivated a love of Pilates with Clare in the early days of Flesh + Bone in 2007. So taken/ecstatic by Pilates' gentle yet powerful corporeality, and the way it put her relationship with her body into focus, Leyna decided to take Clare's advice and become certified to teach Pilates. She began in 2010 as an apprentice in the famed Romana’s Pilates at Drago's where she was certified by Romana's daughter Sari (Joseph Pilates>Sari Mejia Santo) and ultimately the call was to become as bodacious and terrific a badass as her good friend Clare.
Leyna keeps digging into Pilates and discovering there is more. Working weekly for more than 6 years with Cynthia Shipley (Joseph Pilates> Romana Kryzanowska>Cynthia Shipley) she also puts her Pilates to the test with ongoing training at the New York Butoh Institute with Vangeline France, as well as Butoh Master Yumiko Yoshioka, and Noguchi Gymnastics teacher Mari Osanai. She's studied functional anatomy with Irene Dowd and holds a degree in Women's Studies from Mills College with a focus in writing and music. Leyna has taken up surfing alongside her client-champions, and is getting ever-closer to teaching fluently in Spanish.
Deeply psyched and honored to be carrying on the Flesh + Bone legacy, Leyna's gravitational pull keeps the studio a fun place to get serious about physical fitness, which of course is the first requisite to happiness.
Raised on a farm in rural Pennsylvania, Clare Amory was a barefoot BMX racing force to be reckoned with. Her love of motion and ideas eventually led her to Bard college. She graduated with a B.A. in Contemporary Dance/Choreography and moved to NYC. She discovered Pilates while rehabilitating a knee surgery in 1999. Clare began to study the matwork and after healing her knee found that she could suddenly jump higherand with more ease than she had ever been able to before. Her first private session on the equipment moved her so deeply that she immediately sought out instructor training. Classically certified by Master teachers Caitlin Cook (Joseph Pilates>Eve Gentry>Madeleine Black>Caitlin Cook) and Jennifer Deluca (Joseph and Clara Pilates>Romana Kryzanowska>Jennifer Deluca), she continued her study of anatomy with Irene Dowd. Clare studied at the most recognized studios in the city including Dragos (True pilates), Real Pilates, Power Pilates, and Re:ab. She studied closely with Steve Giordano and Cynthia Shipley and worked toward her second full Pilates certification with Romana’s Pilates. Before opening flesh + bone studio Clare not only taught in Pilates studios in Manhattan and Brooklyn, but also in gyms and at a Physical Therapy and Orthopedic Medicine practice. Clare taught on location for varied clients including MTV/Viacom and in The New York City Public Schools. Clare opened flesh + bone in May 2007 and is thrilled with the response.
