HOW LONG IS A SESSION?
HOW MANY TIMES A WEEK SHOULD I DO PILATES?
3 times a week is magic. 2 times a week is effective. Once a week works because it's consistent, but it will take longer to see results. You can do just mat class, or you can do all privates--it's the consistency that counts. Choose a pattern and stick to it. Chances are you'll get addicted to the good feeling and come more often.
I AM PREGNANT. CAN I DO PILATES?
Yes and no. If your doctor has cleared you for exercise AND you've done Pilates regularly before your pregnancy you're good to go. If you've only done mat previously, you can keep doing mat. We won't be able to teach you Pilates for the first time or advance you while your pregnant. However, post-pregnancy Pilates is amazing and we can't wait to get started with you then!
I HAVE AN INJURY. CAN I DO PILATES? CAN I COME TO GROUP CLASSES?
If you have the OK from your doctor, you can absolutely do Pilates if you are disabled, or while you have an injury, or during your recovery. It's what Pilates is all about! Working around an injury or weakness without aggravating it is our specialty. We've trained for years to understand every possible way to modify the exercises--to fit everybody, all bodies.
Now, if you have a serious injury and you're fairly new to Pilates it's recommended you go with Private sessions. Your instructor will tailor the workout to your needs while giving you the tools yourself so that you can eventually join the group setting if that's what you want to do.
HOW SOON AFTER I START PRACTICING WILL I NOTICE A CHANGE IN MY BODY?
Many people feel a difference after the first hour. No joke.
Joseph Pilates is famous for saying: In 10 sessions you'll feel a difference, in 20 sessions you'll see a difference, and in 30 sessions you'll have a whole new body. If you follow along with his math, you'll feel it/see it/have a whole new body in as many sessions. We did!
It also depends on your level of dedication, your consistency, and your initial level of fitness. If you're devoted, the change will come fast. Not only that, but they'll stick.
HOW MANY PEOPLE SHOULD I EXPECT IN GROUP CLASSES?
We keep class size small because personal attention is not a luxury it's essential to healthy practice. Reformer and Combo classes are limited to 3 participants. 4 people in Tower and Barre. 5 people for Restorative yoga. Mat class is limited to 6.
I AM a BEGINNER. CAN I COME TO ANY CLASS?
All of our classes are open level. That means you can come to any class on the schedule. We keep class size small on purpose so you will get plenty of personal attention. Please check out our primer for new clients.
WHAT LEVEL CAN I EXPECT A CLASS TO BE?
We don't have a script. Depending on who comes to class, and the general collective level of who comes to class that day, there will be something for everyone. Our instructors train intensively to be able to push everyone regardless of level.
Now, if you come to the same class each week, as do many of our clients, you can find a groove with your fellow classmates and our teachers. The more you come and the more regularly, the more you'll find the class is for you.
I'M RUNNING LATE, CAN I STILL COME TO CLASS?
If you notify us that you are late, we'll save your spot. If you don't notify us, your spot may go to someone on our waiting list at the class start time. In the case of a private class (or class with one person enrolled) your teacher will wait for 15 minutes. Beyond that time the class will be late cancelled.
IS PILATES JUST FOR WOMEN?
No. Flesh + Bone has more male clients than you would expect. It's not just for the ladies.
WILL PILATES HELP ME TO LOSE WEIGHT?
Absolutely. With devoted, consistent practice multiple times a week, over a period time. It will also inspire you to make other changes towards your goal and your well-being. We'll work with you to create a plan to reach your goal. Add in factors of healthy eating and complimentary forms of activity and exercise, and you're well on your way!
WHAT ABOUT CARDIO?
Pilates is fitness, the way the method was envisioned by Joseph Pilates cardiovascular exercise does not come separately from exercise itself. When you learn Pilates enough that you can move from one exercise to the next with minimum of motion, and you can work deeply with your body, you will sweat into your eyes, you'll get red in the face--and you'll be out the door in one hour.
IS PILATES THE SAME AS PHYSICAL THERAPY?
Pilates is fitness. Once you're cleared from your doctor to exercise we can guide you around an injury or through a weakness to greater overall strength, and even help alleviate a chronic weakness. But we're not doctors, so if you have an injury and are prescribed PT you should do that before you do Pilates. Once you're done--Pilates is the best thing to do next! It is safe enough, it will strengthen you after a period of inactivity, and even make you stronger than before!
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOWER AND REFORMER?
Each apparatus supports and challenges you in a different ways, based on their design. On the Reformer, you're very supported by the headrest, shoulder blocks, foot bar--everything brings the body into its center. It does what it says, it re-forms your body. The Tower also uses spring-based resistance but in a way that is much less supportive, so you have to work hard keep your own body in control. Tower is a crowd-favorite! Because for all your hard work, it gives you a delightful stretch.
I HATE MAT. SHOULD I DO IT?
Yes indeed...There is nothing more challenging than a good mat workout. It can be tough, but like running, once you get to a certain point with it, it actually feels great! You've only got your body and gravity, so you can't cheat. It's crystal clear what you have to work on. Mat class is a part of a healthy well-rounded practice. Kind of like eat your vegetables.
what happens if i can't make it to class?
You will not be charged if you cancel or reschedule your class more than 24 hours in advance.
DO I BRING MY OWN PARTNER TO A DUET APPOINTMENTS?
Yes. Two participants are required for a duet and you must find your partner. However, we can occasionally match-make. If you would like us to help you find another existing client with similar level, goals, or approach, drop us a line.
